The PEMA project, a German-funded initiative aimed at boosting Tunisian exports to Sub-Saharan Africa, successfully concluded on November 29th. This landmark event, celebrated at the Center for the Promotion of Exports (CEPEX), marked the culmination of a transformative program that has significantly enhanced Tunisia’s export capabilities.

A Collaborative Effort to Stimulate Exports

Implemented by GIZ Tunisia in partnership with the Tunisian Ministry of Commerce and CEPEX, PEMA has provided invaluable support to over 1,100 Tunisian companies seeking to expand their reach into new African markets. By fostering the creation of sector-specific consortiums, the project has facilitated a collaborative approach to export development.

These consortiums have undertaken numerous activities, including 35 foreign prospecting missions, participation in 39 international trade fairs, and the organization of 17 training sessions. As a result, 4,844 business opportunities have been identified, leading to the creation of 431 new export projects and 261 jobs, with 119 positions filled by women.

Empowering Women in Business

Since 2022, PEMA has placed a strong emphasis on gender equality, providing targeted support to women-led enterprises. The project has established four new women’s consortiums, which have already generated 21 new export projects, nearly doubling the sales of their members compared to women-owned businesses outside of the collaborative network.

Furthermore, 42 women entrepreneurs have participated in international networking events, strengthening South-South cooperation. These initiatives underscore PEMA’s commitment to promoting gender equality in the economic sphere.

CEPEX: A Catalyst for Export Growth

As a key partner in the project, CEPEX has played a pivotal role in supporting Tunisian exporters. By offering specialized training, B2B matchmaking events, and innovative export tools, CEPEX has helped 71% of supported companies, including 45% of women-led businesses, improve their export capabilities.

Sustainable Impact on the Tunisian Economy

PEMA’s initiatives, such as the Tunisia Africa Business Meetings, have connected Tunisian companies with partners from over 20 African countries. These events have not only fostered strong business relationships but have also laid the foundation for long-lasting economic cooperation.

With the creation of 583 jobs, including 290 for women, the project has demonstrated its ability to promote both economic development and social inclusion. While PEMA may have concluded, its legacy will continue to shape Tunisia’s export landscape.

The Future of Tunisian Exports

As Tunisian businesses build on the successes achieved through PEMA, they are well-positioned to capitalize on the vast opportunities presented by Sub-Saharan Africa. The collaborative approach fostered by the project, coupled with the enhanced capabilities of Tunisian exporters, sets the stage for sustained growth in the region.
